A quick thing for a friend.
Two of my etchings, Surface (II) and Surface (IV), are on display at Pop-Up Scotland’s exhibition at Ocean Terminal! They’re there until September 14th.
Both prints are taken from different stages in the life of one zinc plate, in 2011 and 2012 respectively. On and off I’ve reworked the surface of the metal with different chemical techniques, and periodically taken a one-off print to act as a document of that point in the process. There’s no end goal to this, and it’s been interesting to watch structures within the image change or disappear completely.
I’ve a new window painting up at Shelter Nicolson St: comedy and tragedy masks for the festival.
It was deathly hot in working in the window in summer, like a little greenhouse. But I had some fun interacting with people going by on the street.
So I just finished a really big commission last week: an 8-metre painting on the glass wall of the Eric Liddel Centre’s dementia space in Edinburgh. It was great fun: this might or might not be the largest thing I’ve ever made. It’s certainly in the top five.
The brief was for a cityscape, and since it’s a really huge thing, in a room that people spend a lot of their day in, I wanted it to be something that you could spend plenty of time looking at and not get bored. There’s a lot of stuff in this picture, at least some of which is captured in these photos. You can always go see it in person, as well.
HEY, BIG BANG PRESS!
Not to jinx anything, but Congratufuckinglations on getting within shaving distance of the kickstarter goal already. And I’m so tickled that you liked my print!
It was kind of a new, high-speed process for me, and it turned out pretty well if I say so, so here’s a Francis to go with it. It came out VERY dark and nasty; I definitely went a bit overboard there. Maybe I’ll go back and fix that some time, but I need to sleep now, so voila!
